Cascaded Parametric Amplification for Highly Efficient Terahertz Generation
A highly efficient, practical approach to high-energy terahertz (THz)
generation based on spectrally cascaded optical parametric amplification
(THz-COPA) is introduced. The THz wave initially generated by difference
frequency generation between a strong narrowband optical pump and optical seed
(0.1-10% of pump energy) kick-starts a repeated or cascaded energy
down-conversion of pump photons. This helps to greatly surpass the
quantum-defect efficiency and results in exponential growth of THz energy over
crystal length. In cryogenically cooled periodically poled lithium niobate,
energy conversion efficiencies >8% for 100 ps pulses are predicted. The
calculations account for cascading effects, absorption, dispersion and
laser-induced damage. Due to the coupled nonlinear interaction of multiple
triplets of waves, THz-COPA exhibits physics distinct from conventional
three-wave mixing parametric amplifiers. This in turn governs optimal
phase-matching conditions, evolution of optical spectra as well as limitations

Gradient-free quantum optimization on NISQ devices
Variational Quantum Eigensolvers (VQEs) have recently attracted considerable
attention. Yet, in practice, they still suffer from the efforts for estimating
cost function gradients for large parameter sets or resource-demanding
reinforcement strategies. Here, we therefore consider recent advances in
weight-agnostic learning and propose a strategy that addresses the trade-off
between finding appropriate circuit architectures and parameter tuning. We
investigate the use of NEAT-inspired algorithms which evaluate circuits via
genetic competition and thus circumvent issues due to exceeding numbers of
parameters. Our methods are tested both via simulation and on real quantum
hardware and are used to solve the transverse Ising Hamiltonian and the

Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury is a devastating condition impacting adversely on the health and wellbeing, functioning and independence, social participation and quality of life of the injured person. In Australia, there are approximately 15 new cases per million population per year; economic burden estimates suggest 2 billion dollars annually. For optimal patient outcomes expert consensus recommends expeditious transfer (“24 hours) in a Spinal Cord Injury Unit. Examining current health service and clinical intervention pathways in this Australian population-based sample, in relation to their outcomes, will provide an understanding of factors associated with patient flow, resource utilisation and cost, and patient and family quality of life. Barriers to streamlined effective early-care pathways and facilitators of optimal treatment for these patients will be identified
Making justice more accessible
From the point of view of the Citizen, Justice is not always readily
accessible. Either because it is a lengthy process, potentially
expensive, sometimes unclear or simply scary, people will often
avoid or withdraw from a judicial process, especially in those
cases that involve relatively small amounts. This results in the
giving up of a basic right, with the potential loss of rightful
benefits. In this paper we briefly analyze the main aspects that
impair access to Justice nowadays. We then move on to look at
recent technological developments in the field of Online Dispute
Resolution to argue that these can, in the near future, have a
significant role in improving access to Justice. Specifically, we
analyze the UMCourt Conflict Resolution Framework, developed
by our research team, and address the different dimensions in
which such tools contribute to make Justice more accessible,
namely through better access to useful information, support in
decision-making or more cost-effective processes.Development Fund through the COMPETE Programme

Dark Matter and Fundamental Physics with the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a project for a next-generation
observatory for very high energy (GeV-TeV) ground-based gamma-ray astronomy,
currently in its design phase, and foreseen to be operative a few years from
now. Several tens of telescopes of 2-3 different sizes, distributed over a
large area, will allow for a sensitivity about a factor 10 better than current
instruments such as H.E.S.S, MAGIC and VERITAS, an energy coverage from a few
tens of GeV to several tens of TeV, and a field of view of up to 10 deg. In the
following study, we investigate the prospects for CTA to study several science
questions that influence our current knowledge of fundamental physics. Based on
conservative assumptions for the performance of the different CTA telescope
configurations, we employ a Monte Carlo based approach to evaluate the
prospects for detection. First, we discuss CTA prospects for cold dark matter
searches, following different observational strategies: in dwarf satellite
galaxies of the Milky Way, in the region close to the Galactic Centre, and in
clusters of galaxies. The possible search for spatial signatures, facilitated
by the larger field of view of CTA, is also discussed. Next we consider
searches for axion-like particles which, besides being possible candidates for
dark matter may also explain the unexpectedly low absorption by extragalactic
background light of gamma rays from very distant blazars. Simulated
light-curves of flaring sources are also used to determine the sensitivity to
violations of Lorentz Invariance by detection of the possible delay between the
arrival times of photons at different energies. Finally, we mention searches

Biopolitics meets Terrapolitics: Political Ontologies and Governance in Settler-Colonial Australia
Crises persist in Australian Indigenous affairs because current policy approaches do not address the intersection of Indigenous and European political worlds. This paper responds to this challenge by providing a heuristic device for delineating Settler and Indigenous Australian political ontologies and considering their interaction. It first evokes Settler and Aboriginal ontologies as respectively biopolitical (focused through life) and terrapolitical (focused through land). These ideal types help to identify important differences that inform current governance challenges. The paper discusses the entwinement of these traditions as a story of biopolitical dominance wherein Aboriginal people are governed as an “included-exclusion” within the Australian political community. Despite the overall pattern of dominance, this same entwinement offers possibilities for exchange between biopolitics and terrapolitics, and hence for breaking the recurrent crises of Indigenous affairs

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field.BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus, as well as subsequent ocular complications such as cystoid macular edema (CME), are of fundametal socio-economic relevance. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of internal limiting membrane (ILM) removal on longterm morphological and functional outcome in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 and chronic CME without evident vitreomacular traction. METHOD: Forty eyes with attached posterior hyaloid were included in this prospective trial and randomized intraoperatively. Prior focal (n = 31) or panretinal (n = 25) laser coagulation was permitted. Group I (n = 19 patients) underwent surgical induction of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), group II (n = 20 patients) PVD and removal of the ILM. Eleven patients with detached posterior hyaloid (group III) were not randomized, and ILM removal was performed. One eye had to be excluded from further analysis. Examinations included ETDRS best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fluorescein angiography (FLA) and OCT at baseline, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Main outcome measure was BCVA at 6 months, secondary was foveal thickness. RESULTS: Mean BCVA over 6 months remained unchanged in 85% of patients of group II, and decreased in 53% of patients of group I. Results were not statistically significant different [group I: mean decrease log MAR 95% CI (0.06; 0.32), group II: (-0.02; 0.11)]. OCT revealed a significantly greater reduction of foveal thickness following PVD with ILM removal [group I: mean change: 95% CI (-208.95 μm; -78.05 μm), group II: (-80.90 μm: +59.17 μm)]. CONCLUSION: Vitrectomy, PVD with or without ILM removal does not improve vision in patients with DM type 2 and cystoid diabetic macular edema without evident vitreoretinal traction. ILM delamination shows improved morphological results, and appears to be beneficial in eyes with preexisting PVD
Resilience of refugees displaced in the developing world: a qualitative analysis of strengths and struggles of urban refugees in Nepal
BACKGROUND: Mental health and psychosocial wellbeing are key concerns in displaced populations. Despite urban refugees constituting more than half of the world's refugees, minimal attention has been paid to their psychosocial wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to assess coping behaviour and aspects of resilience amongst refugees in Kathmandu, Nepal. METHODS: This study examined the experiences of 16 Pakistani and 8 Somali urban refugees in Kathmandu, Nepal through in-depth individual interviews, focus groups, and Photovoice methodology. Such qualitative approaches enabled us to broadly discuss themes such as personal experiences of being a refugee in Kathmandu, perceived causes of psychosocial distress, and strategies and resources for coping. Thematic network analysis was used in this study to systematically interpret and code the data. RESULTS: Our findings highlight that urban refugees' active coping efforts, notwithstanding significant adversity and resulting distress, are most frequently through primary relationships. Informed by Axel Honneth's theory on the struggle for recognition, findings suggest that coping is a function beyond the individual and involves the ability to negotiate recognition. This negotiation involves not only primary relationships, but also the legal order and other social networks such as family and friends. Honneth's work was used because of its emphasis on the importance of legal recognition and larger structural factors in facilitating daily coping. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding how urban refugees cope by negotiating access to various forms of recognition in the absence of legal-recognition will enable organisations working with them to leverage such strengths and develop relevant programmes. In particular, building on these existing resources will lead to culturally compelling and sustainable care for these populations
